Titanium And Its Alloys Have High Stability In Neutral Or Weak Acidic Oxides Solution

Titanium and titanium alloys are also highly stable for oxidant solutions containing ions,such as 100qC sodium hypochlorite solution,oxygen,water,gas(up to 75 C),sodium oxide solution containing hydrogen peroxide,etc.

The corrosion resistance of titanium and titanium alloys in wet chlorine gas is higher than that of other commonly used metals.This is because chlorine has strong oxidation effect.Titanium and titanium alloys can be in a stable passive state in wet chlorine.In order to maintain the passivity of titanium in chlorine gas,a certain water content is needed.Critical water content is related to oxygen pressure,flow rate,temperature and other factors.It is also related to the shape and size of titanium equipment or parts and the degree of mechanical damage of titanium surface.Therefore,the critical water content of titanium passivation in oxygen is not consistent in the literature.It is generally believed that 0.01%-0.05%mass fraction can be used as the critical water content of titanium in oxygen,but practical experience refers to the critical water content of titanium in oxygen.In order to ensure the safe use of titanium equipment in oxygen,sometimes the water quality fraction of 0.6%is not enough,which needs up to 1.5%.The critical water content also increases with the increase of chlorine temperature and the decrease of air velocity.

Practical operation experience also shows that high water content is needed to re-passivate titanium and titanium alloys after the surface oxide film of titanium and titanium alloys is destroyed.

Titanium and titanium alloys react intensely in dry chlorine gas,even below 0 C,to produce titanium tetrachloride,which is dangerous to fire.Once the destruction of titanium and titanium alloys in dry chlorine gas begins,the reaction is collapsed,and the addition of water can not prevent the reaction from proceeding.

Titanium and titanium alloys have high corrosion resistance in gasoline,toluene,phenol,formaldehyde,trichloroethane,acetic acid,citric acid,and ethyl chloride.However,at boiling point and without aeration,titanium will be seriously corroded in formic acid with mass fraction less than 25%.In solution containing acetic anhydride,titanium will not only suffer serious overall corrosion,but also produce pitting corrosion.The corrosion resistance of titanium and titanium alloys is superior to other structural materials of stainless steel anode in many complex organic media,such as propylene oxide,phenol,acetone and chloroacetic acid.
